AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION

Tracey D. Brown
Chief Executive Officer

February Issue Crown & Sword

As we enter an exciting new year for the American Diabetes Association (ADA), I want to take a moment to personally thank our wonderful supporters in the Order of the Amaranth for all that you have done in years past and will continue to do in 2019 and beyond to support our mission! The generosity of your members, and your ongoing efforts to join us in our efforts to find a cure for diabetes while improving the lives of those living with it have made it possible for people like me to not just live but thrive with this disease.
As you may know, the Order of the Amaranth has partnered with ADA and raised $16 million for research funding to fight diabetes. Your support has contributed to ground-breaking research examining issues such as the connections between genetics, aging and diabetes risk; regenerating Beta cells to treat and prevent diabetes; and how diabetes increases the risk of heart attacks. Our longstanding collaboration is a powerful example of how two organizations can work together to make a real difference.
While we have made great strides, there is still more work to be done to bend the curve and eliminate the stigma of diabetes. This isn’t just a problem; it is in fact one of the biggest health epidemics of our time. 1 out of 2 people is either living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and if you are not living with it, you likely know someone who is. We must continue to collaborate in new and innovative ways and put the needs of people living with diabetes first.
We are all connected, Connected For Life. Let’s continue to fight together and make 2019 the best year yet!

AMARANTH DIABETES FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

HL Charlene Tucker, President

February Issue Crown & Sword

Happy New Year and best wishes to each of you for a wonderful 2019. As we begin this new year it is my pleasure to inform you that the ADF board has selected Dr. Tracey McLaughlin from Stanford University as the newest researcher that we will be funding. Dr. McLaughlin’s grant, “Understanding how Gastric Surgery Reverses Type 2 Diabetes” is working on understanding exactly how gastric bypass surgery can reverse diabetes in type 2 patients. Currently, gastric bypass is the only known way to reverse T2D in a sustainable and durable manner. Persistent remission of T2D occurs in approximately 85% of people who undergo this procedure. This new grant will be funded 2019-2021.
Do you or a family member have diabetes? Do you have a story that you would be willing to share on how diabetes has affected you? We are looking for members stories to use for future Matching Gift Campaigns with the American Diabetes Association. This is your opportunity to reach many people with your story and assist us in raising funds to find a cure for this disease.
Remember to recognize those members in your Grand Courts who you feel is an Unsung Hero. Many Grand Courts will be holding their sessions in the upcoming months and we would like to recognize those members that you feel have gone above and beyond in raising funds for diabetes research. Send an email to me at charlenekaytucker@gmail.com  and I will do my best to have a certificate at your session.
Individual Service Award deadline is on March 30, 2019. This award can be presented to both our international and national Grand Courts. The submission form is on the Supreme website under the forms tab. Please consider making a nomination of one of your members so that we can honour and recognize them at our Supreme Council Session in June. If I can be of any assistance to you please contact me by email: charlenekaytucker@gmail.com  or telephone 360-241-1988. Looking forward to seeing you in June.

Safe Travels and Best Wishes Always.
